In 2017 the 500 years of the birth of the Protestant Reformation will be celebrated, the christian religious movement, initiated in Germany in the XVI century by Martin Luther. Since then many things have changed, but the Spirit of renovation with which it started is still in full force, the reformed church continues in it’s walk towards God and the well being of society.
This was a world renowned milestone, that has permitted the expansion of the gospel and freedom of religion in many countries, nowadays many of us can gather to worship and have a Bible in our hands.
For several decades there has been an interreligious dialogue referring to tolerance, cooperation, peace and unity, understanding that the different religious denominations are invoking God.
October 31st 1517 is probably one of the most important dates for the the western world: on this day the german friar Martin Luther hung a document which contained 95 theses, on the doors of the church of the Palace of Wittenberg, in which Luther harshly criticized the Catholic Church and its doctrines.
The influence of protestantism has been colossal, it was fundamental for the origins of modern capitalism and the birth of the United States in the XVII century. Today the United States is one of the countries with the largest protestant population, even if they’re broken into various branches. In addition protestantism in its various versions kept expanding throughout the entire world, currently there are approximately 800 million protestants, paradoxically outside of Europe in countries such as Brazil, China and Nigeria.
In Colombia, the number of evangelical churches has increased exponentially. Currently, christian churches have an active participation in the activities of the country. A couple of million of colombians go to their temples or congregations and every day they are more dynamic in themes like interdenominational dialogue, social and educational missions, and even defending human rights. This vision explains why christian churches have received the 500 years of the Protestant Reformation enthusiastically, with the vision that it was an event that consolidated a cosmovision in which they believe and defend.
